We Are Atheism is a go-go!

We Are Atheism is this awesome new website that will:
  • Provide an outlet for atheists to feel comfortable to come out of the closet.
  • Always let visitors know there are other people out there that are non-believers.
  • Help people find other atheists like them in their state, city, and even neighborhood.
  • Give access to local, national, and international organization to become involved in the secular community.
  • Empower people to start their own organization in areas that does not already have one.

Sounds awesome, right? I was very excited when Amanda Brown (the sites co-founder, and who also worked with Darrel Ray on the Sex and Secularism Survey) asked me to be one of the initial participants for the site after meeting at the SSA Annual Conference this year. I hate watching myself on video, but you can go through the similar pain and watch mine if you want to :P.

Personally, I think this endeavor will be more successful than Richard Dawkins "Out Campaign", primarily because it's more pro-active and personal. A scarlet letter "A" does let people know that you're an atheist, but it really only works if they're familiar with the "A." And unfortunately that's not many people outside of the secular movement.

So, go make a page on it here! The only way we're going to grow as a group is if it's a welcoming environment that isn't as scary as their churches have said. You can be that welcoming face.
